Staff Sgt. Robert Wesley Hunt, US Army (ret.) of Alamogordo, NM, died Thursday, May 19, 2005 at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center. He was sixty-eight years of age.
SSgt. Hunt, formerly of Glasgow, was born November 22, 1936, the son of the late Oscar (Red) Hunt and Francis Saunders Hunt. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Lee Hunt.
Surviving members of SSgt. Hunts family include his wife, Dealia Gannon Hunt of Glasgow; two daughters: Joni Hunt Sheridan of Sugar Hill, GA and Cheryl Hunt of Lexington; one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Melissa Hunt of Montpelier; three granddaughters: Catherine Sheridan, Olivia Sheridan and Margaret Hunt; one grandson, Joshua Hunt and one sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Lyle Fitzgerald of Buena Vista.
After enlisting at the age of seventeen, SSgt. Hunt served twenty years in the U.S. Army. Following basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC, he served in Okinawa, Korea, Germany, Panama, numerous locations stateside and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was very proud of his service in Vietnam.
A helicopter mechanic, he served first in Chu Lai from 1968-1969 with the Americal division, 8th Cavalry, F Troop. From 1971-1972, he served in Da Nang with the 1st Aviation Brigate, 4th Cavalry, 62nd Aviation Company and F Troop. SSgt. Hunt retired from the Army in 1975 at Ft. Bliss, Texas.
His hobbies included maintaining and restoring his two 1970 Ford Torinos. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Yucca Post #8919 and the Americal Veterans.
